Elounda golf course

One of the finest 9-hole, par-3 courses in the Mediterranean, porto Elounda Golf Club was sculpted from a multi-terraced olive grove with spectacular views overlooking the island of Spinalonga and Mirabello Bay in northeastern Crete. Designed by award-winning architect Spyros Kokotos, the golf course is a fine example of successfully integrating aspects of the natural terrain with soft, sloping fairways and richly-textured greens. Creator of the luxury hotels and resorts of Elounda, Spyros Kokotos was the first president of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) and an early advocate of golf development in Greece.

Though most Pitch and Putt courses have tee shots of limited length, Elounda differs. Redesigned in 2003, distances range from 60 meters (10th hole) to 160 meters (4th hole). The course is relatively free of hazards and provides an unrivalled setting bordered by luxury pool-side suites and an open vista of Elounda Bay. Each player’s handicap is converted by a factor of 0.4 to match the level of difficulty over nine holes. Going out, the course plays 1042 meters. For safety reasons, men are not allowed to carry anything greater than a five iron; women, a five wood. Once a helipad, the 5th tee-box is dubbed the “Volcano,” as strong winds swirling across the elevated tee-box make a perfect shot to the green difficult. Coming in, the course plays 854 meters. A meandering flower-bedded walkway between the hotel complex and the beach separates the 7th, 8th and 9th holes from the rest of the course and a short carry is needed from the 7th tee to reach the other side. The course is built on only one hectare of land, but what is lost in size is made up in shape. The course plays 18 holes, as each 9-hole round is played from a different tee-box with different colored tees for men and ladies. One of the greatest pleasures of Pitch and Putt courses is that a full round of 18 holes can be easily completed in less than two hours. It is an excellent golf destination for players of all skill levels: beginners can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, while advanced golfers can sharpen their short game.
