Costa Navarino excellently organized the Messinia Pro-Am, its first International Golf Tournament, setting again Messinia at the centre of global interest. Despite the fact that Messinia Pro-Am tournament was organized for the first time, the golfers welcomed it with an impressive turnout, showing its potential to rank among the most important tournaments in Europe. The Westin Resort hosted a total of 27 teams, 27 top professional golf players and 81 amateur golfers arriving from 14 different countries in order to compete in the 1st Messinia Pro-Am Golf Tournament held at the Dunes Course and the Bay Course, the two awarded golf courses of Costa Navarino. The 1st Messinia Pro-Am Golf Tournament was held from Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 of February, 2017 in three rounds with the participation of golfers from USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece. The tournament took place under the sunny sky of Peloponnese allowing foreign golfers especially to enjoy the early spring weather while fully developing their skills in fairways.

All teams consisted of one professional and three amateur golf players competing all day through in two 18-hole golf courses. The high level of golfers and especially of those having participated in the competing part of the tournament, kept up the vivid interest of spectators in the game by enjoying constant twists in the daily winner ranking until the end of the competition round! Spectators enjoyed the excellent performance of the German journalist for the Golf Spielen magazine, Petra Himmel who managed the “Hole-in-one” since day 2 of the tournament and ranked among the top 6 golfers having achieved this rare feat at the Bay Course.
Petra Himmel was also awarded with the “Longest Drive” and the “Closest To The Pin” prizes for the women’s category. In men’s category, the “Longest Drive” prize was awarded to David Arendt, while Charis Papadopoulos won the “Closest To The Pin” award. At the team level, Stuart Boyle’s team rank first at the professional category, while Steve Dooley’s team won second place and Panos Karatzas third. Charis Papadopoulos, Georgios Kyvernitis and Daniele Bivio rank first at the amateur category, with Gerhard Komarek, Andreas Hainz and Gerhard Marischka winning the second place and Igor Graskin, Christian Werner and Bettina Schroeder ranking third. Federico Elli (PGA Italy) was the 1st Messinia Pro–Am Golf Tournament Champion. “Costa Navarino is one of the top golf destinations all over the world and we shall definitely come back next year”, stated Federico Elli to the PGAs of Europe. Ralph Miller (PGA the Netherlands) rank second and Lorenzo Gagli (PGA Italy) rank third. It is worth mentioning that all three winners visited both Costa Navarino and Greece for the first time in their entire life.
Hugo Santos (Portugal) won 4th place, while Emanuele Canonica (Italy) won 5th and the winner of the 4th Aegean Airlines Pro Am (2009), Paul Nilbrink rank 6th. Apart from top golf players, the top US basketball player Joe Arlauckas and the German TV presenter, Annica Hansen was among less famous golfers that took part in the tournament.
Costa Navarino Golf Academy did an excellent job in attracting young people to the tournament. Starting from its own athletes, the Academy offered future champions the opportunity to live the experience of an International tournament and watch most valuable golf players in action. On behalf of the organizers, the President and CEO of TEMES S.A. developers of Costa Navarino, Achilles V. Constantakopoulos, in his welcome speech referred to the vision of his late father Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos to render Greece a top golf destination and hoped for the Messinia Pro – Am Tournament to become one of the annual golf events at an International level.
This is a shared vision for all Greeks passionate with golf as the Messinia Pro – Am Golf Tournament by Costa Navarino would become an important golf tournament as the most successful Aegean Airlines Pro-Am Golf Tournament, for Greece.
An event able to attract professional players and sponsors and most importantly to contribute in both local and national economy, while also promoting Messinia as an ideal golf destination in the Mediterranean region.
See you all to ths 2nd Messinia Pro-Am in 2018!
